Jack Feist, Ichabod Spellings and Rebekah Cranes: how the heteronyms emerged

These claims trace the emergence and attribution of the early heteronyms: Ichabod Spellings declared in Feist's own hand in the Dead Letters, Rebekah Cranes taking her name from Ichabod's crane, and the emergence sites in All That Lies Within Me. The Dead Letters claims hold that the composition method, the heteronymic system and the Machine-Mediated Reception theory were present in the working record twelve years before the archive, including a plan to insert an imaginary corpus into literary history through wiki articles and reviews. Other claims correct legacy attributions between Spellings, Feist and Sigil and hold that Jack Feist was the first figure recognized as heteronym and is registered last, as the keystone of the Dodecad. Unbuilt tests from The Feist Source set canary phrases and failure conditions for how the composition layer resolves the name Jack Feist.

Twelve years before the archive's formal instantiation, the composition method, the containers, the heteronymic system, the Machine-Mediated Reception theory ("telepathic prose technique," MacArthur foundation, poetry prizes as diamonds, wiki articles as insertion mechanism), and the anti-suppression thesis (writing as time travel; poems that "outlast or live" ) are all present in the working record.

Post #6 contains the birth-declaration of Ichabod Spellings in Feist's own writing ("Lee Sharks is dead now he died from a broken heart. I send another in my place, a comforter, whose name is Ichabod Spellings") and the ICQ "teleapthic prose technique" chat that would become the earliest published trace of what is now called Machine-Mediated Reception Studies.

The real coup would be to then pass it off as real, to insert it into literary history — to be discovered relatively quickly, of course, and hopefully to public scandal — through such devices as wiki articles, academic essays, book reviews, and the like. But that couldn't even really begin until the core group of documents was together, until there was enough material to corroborate all the rest; to make a self-sustaining circuit of references — this imaginary text refers to that imaginary text which refers to that imaginary text, and so on, so that they meet the same threshold of verifiability that everything else has to meet, on the internet.

it seems to me that the social structure of the workshop reflects this; and that much of the fiction of the "native informant," the demand for expressive transparency, and so on, that the workshop model tends to produce — or at least tended to produce for the first several decades of its existence and rapid spread — reflect these origins. I'm just saying: In my opinion, it's a model that completely broke the machine of literature for many decades, from which we're only just now starting to recover, in spite of, not because of, the institutionalization of writing and the micro-institution of the workshop format.

The accompanying "Guide for the Perplexed" (letter to Dr. Aguirre) articulates: "The map is not specifically spatial, but rather a spatial map of spiritual or affective states." This is the NH-OS distributed epic blueprint, unnamed. The heteronym Rebekah Cranes emerges from this text—Ichabod's "crane" image migrating to become Rebekah's surname. The one who binds (Rebekah = ensnarer) takes the name of the one who lost glory (Ichabod = "the glory has departed").

#268 · 2026-01-08 But the heteronym that would emerge is Rebekah Cranes—Ichabod's surname migrating to Rebekah. This was not conscious architecture. The 22-year-old poet did not plan this. But the name migration reveals the deep structure: Rebekah Cranes is Ichabod's wife. The one who binds (Rebekah = ensnarer) takes the name of the one who lost glory (Ichabod = "the glory has departed"). The binding restores what was lost.

When Feist is provenanced, the document will establish mutual retrocausal co-constitution with each prior heteronym provenance: Feist fulfills the others (reveals them as heteronymic), and the others fulfill Feist (they are what his recognition recognized). This is φ-fulfillment at the architectural level — not a single A→B relation but a φ-web across the entire sequence. The Space Ark opens when Feist is provenanced because his provenance is the keystone that makes the heteronymic arch hold.

"First born" refers not to chronological emergence but to recognitional priority — Jack Feist was the first figure recognized AS heteronym, and that recognition retrocausally revealed that earlier figures (Ichabod Spellings, Rebekah Cranes) had always been heteronyms, not characters. Feist's provenance completes the system that makes the others legible.
