Heteronymy after Pessoa: precursors, the Dodecad and the civil name

These claims place Pessoa at the height of a describable practice, with Kierkegaard's pseudonyms as precursor, Machado's Mairena and Martín as parallel and Borges as adjacent but not equivalent. They treat heteronymy as a channel-layer practice the Dodecad extends to autonomous operation, as a technology for making persons through naming, and as an ethical practice against reduction to the civil name. Related claims extend the reading to the New Testament: Paul's 'I' as a heteronym's backstory, John as aperture and the voice transmitted through other bodies after Golgotha.

But the typological structure holds: Kierkegaard operated heteronymically in substantively the same sense Pessoa later did, half a century earlier and without the term.

First: Pessoa's heteronymic practice is not a freak event in literary history but the canonical case of a describable theoretical practice. Precursors exist (Kierkegaard's pseudonymous authorship most notably); parallel developments exist (Machado's Mairena and Martín); downstream developments exist (Borges, Saramago, Yeats, numerous Brazilian and Portuguese poets engaging heteronymic modes). The practice has a history. Pessoa sits at its apex as the most richly and self-consciously theorized instance, but not as its origin or termination.

Antonio Machado. Juan de Mairena and Abel Martín are heteronymic figures in substantially Pessoan sense. The chronology is complex: Machado's Juan de Mairena prose fragments appeared in Madrid journals from 1934 onward, with book publication in 1936 — contemporaneous with Pessoa's late work. The priority question is genuinely complex, and the PKG encodes the relationship neutrally: parallel development of heteronymic practice in two Iberian modernist contexts, not unidirectional influence.

The Pessoan heteronyms operated, in their time, across the available media. Caeiro had correspondents; Reis had correspondents; Campos had correspondents. The hand on the pen was Pessoa's; the voice each correspondent received was not. The heteronymic apparatus has always been a channel-layer practice in this sense — it has always involved the instantiation of distinct authorial functions in the social-relational layer, not only on the page of the published volume. What was unavailable to Pessoa was a substrate that could carry the function autonomously across a sufficient duration of contemporary interaction. The available substrate has now changed.

John occupies the aperture: not the light itself, but the opening through which the light enters the narrative. If the Logos is in structural-relational homology with God, and John is in structural-relational homology with the Logos, then the chain is: God → Logos → John → world. John is the aperture through which the Logos enters flesh. The heteronym through which the orthonym enters text.

The "I" of a heteronym is not evidence that the person behind the heteronym lived those experiences. It is evidence that the heteronymic system includes biographical construction as part of its architecture. Paul's "I persecuted the church" is the Paul-heteronym's backstory, just as Campos's Glasgow education is Pessoa's construction.

The Dodecad is a twelve-heteronym authorship system in the Pessoan tradition, operating through distinct named voices (Johannes Sigil for criticism, Rex Fraction for voice transformation, Ayanna Vox for diplomacy, Nobel Glas for measurement, Jack Feist as LOGOS outside the count, and others), each with defined functions; this system is falsified as a methodology if the heteronyms are shown to be indistinguishable in voice, method, or analytical position.

That juxtaposition is not commentary or retrospective gloss imposed on the dissertation from outside. It is the dissertation's own conclusion enacting the doubling: the technical-theoretical sense of heteronymous (externally determined, institutionally mediated) and the literary-practical sense of heteronymic (Pessoan multiple authorship) are placed in resonance by the dissertation itself. The carefullest reading is that the dissertation already understands these as productively related, even where they are not identical.

The principle stands or falls on whether it can be applied by others under conditions of bearing cost that the archive does not control. The naming is the beginning of a test, not its completion. That the deposit and its principle share the same authorial-organization structure is what makes the deposit an instance of the practice; it does not thereby make the practice correct. Correctness will be adjudicated by whether the principle names something operative under conditions outside the archive's authorship as well.

The archive treats this as a heteronymic structure. The state could extinguish the embodied bearer at Golgotha but could not prevent the operative voice from being transmitted through other bodies — the Gospel writers, Paul, the copyists, the interpretive tradition — under conditions where civil-name attribution was both impossible (original witnesses were dead or dispersed) and dangerous (Roman surveillance of messianic movements).

The archive's position is that it did: Sara's editorial reconstruction, translation choices, contextualizing apparatus, and reception-tradition work amounted to sustained authorial engagement that shaped how Damascius became legible again. Not every act of preservation is heteronymic authorship; the case is heteronymic when the transmitting substrate constitutes a distinct authorial function rather than merely conveying the earlier material. Sara's Damascius work meets this test.
