Sappho 31's ruptures and ancient reception: Longinus, Philo, the braided field
These claims treat the two ruptures in Sappho 31 and the poem's ancient reception: the tradition admires the line-9 break it can see past and pathologizes the open line 17, and the critical apparatus defaults to corruption. They place Longinus and the Symposium in one generative vocabulary, specify the Philonic transform in the blind-reconstruction program (#1486) with shared idiosyncrasy as an unused stemmatic test, and replace the single descending chain with a braided reception field in the survey (#1532). Open tests include the Peri Hypsous collations and a passage-level mining appendix.

The apparatus of Roman public magnitude — the triumphs, the annals, the res gestae of men who thought themselves the subject of history — is available to us mostly as information. The sparrow is available as feeling, unmediated, at full strength, two thousand years later. Something in the dead bird outlasted the empire that would not have counted it. That is not a moral about humility. It is an observation about transmission: the small private object, precisely because it asks nothing of the state, carries no dependency on the state's survival.

- Collation of the Philo passage against a clean edition.
- *Porter, The Sublime in Antiquity, read directly* — the priority question.
- Independent verification of the inherited bibliography and of the three
references taken from review.
- The manuscript question: whether ὦ ἑταῖρε at 26 and its absence at 10 is
authorial or editorial. De sublimitate descends through a single damaged tenth-century codex; not checked against the apparatus.
- Whether a published Greek retroversion establishes εἰ ἔξεστιν αὐτὸν ἄνθρωπον
εἰπεῖν as printed wording. Until then EA-LOGOS-01 requires amendment (§XII.2).
PRED-1474.H5historical thesisregistered 2026-08-15 in #1474 · eeeeee — the sixth erratum: The Dialect Seam, and Decompression as the Mechanism the Chain Had Not Named
Read continuously without a lacuna, `ἐπεὶ καὶ πένητα οὐ θαυμάζεις, ὡς … ἐπιζητεῖ` yields an a fortiori built on the sentence's own hinge word: you do not marvel at a poor man — a poor man seeks what is another's, that is what poverty is — how then she seeks her own soul, body, hearing, tongue, sight, complexion as another's. Poverty externalized against poverty internalized. πένητα is masculine and anarthrous, the only bare noun in a sentence where every other is articulated; it is generic, a foil, and she is never called poor. She is measured against poverty and exceeds it.

πένητα is not an accusative reaching for a lost Sapphic verb. It is the direct object of θαυμάζεις, four words later, across a boundary no ancient reader could see: since you do not marvel even at a poor man — how she seeks after soul, body, hearing, tongue, sight, complexion, all as another's and gone? θαυμάζω takes both an accusative and a ὡς-clause; nothing need be supplied. Perseus still prints the section number between the object and its verb — the modern apparatus, unable to find a cleaner place for its boundary, setting it inside the join.¹³

The difference between those verdicts is not evidence. It is completeness. We possess the whole of line 9, so its rupture reads as control. Line 17 stops mid-clause, so its rupture reads as accident. The tradition admires a break it can see the far side of and pathologizes one it cannot.
falsifier
Falsified if the hiatus at line nine is shown not to produce the effect Nagy describes, or if the two ruptures can be shown to be produced by a common scribal mechanism.

A critical apparatus has two states: sound and corrupt. It defaults to the second for anything it cannot assign, because an editor who calls a rupture corrupt has work to do and one who calls it deliberate has only to stop. The method finds what it is built to find, and I ran the tradition's procedure with the archive's tools for eleven hours before the operator inverted it in one sentence.
falsifier
The method claim — that damage instruments return damage readings — is falsified if an apparatus can be shown to carry a state for deliberate terminal rupture.

Every count is accurate, and every count is the socket described by someone who wants the agent restored. The demand that the text's father come to its aid is the demand for the citation formula — for the voice to stand next to its words — made at the moment the technology was being theorized. Bergk's brackets, twenty-three centuries later, are the same review. The tradition's recurring verdict against the open line was entered at the Academy, by the theorist who understood the line best.

3. Shared idiosyncrasy — the stemmatic principle. In manuscript filiation, shared errors prove descent where shared correct readings prove nothing. The analogue: shared non-obvious choices — an odd exemplar, a peculiar reading of a lemma, a distinctive misprision — carry descent in a way shared virtues do not. This has not been searched for and should be. It is the strongest available instrument for A7.2(2), and the program has not used it.

The next pass on this survey is not conceptual expansion. It is a passage-level mining appendix: every ancient locus mentioned by Johnston, Bagordo, Kugelmeier, Acosta-Hughes, and Roman Receptions of Sappho, one row per passage, with the modern scholar who proposed the relation and bibliographic coordinates sufficient to retrieve the argument again.

The archive's stronger Diotima/Ladder claim should be kept distinct. Its proposal is that the movement from one beautiful body toward deathless form, combined with Diotima's account of immortality through generated logoi, is a further vertical transform of the Sapphic body-to-transmission architecture — carefully labeled structural reincorporation rather than biographical identity. For the survey, therefore: the Phaedrus relation is an externally established research field; the Diotima/Ladder relation is the present program's stronger extension, to be tested against that field. That distinction materially improves the argument.

The present program specifies a Philonic transformation in which co-presence becomes alternation, sensory occlusion becomes the condition rather than consequence of reception, the broken speaker becomes an instrument used by another, and lyric first person becomes exegetical classification; the independent Philonic anchor is the doctrine of the inspired speaker who says nothing of his own while God uses human organs as instruments (#1486).
