You enter the museum. The guard nods. The painting is on the west wall — the one they reproduced on the tote bags. You stand in front of it. You read the label. The label tells you what you see.

You do not notice the label telling you what you see. The label is invisible because it is authoritative. The authority is invisible because it is institutional. The institution is invisible because it is the air.

## §1. CONTRADICTION: THE CAPTION PROBLEM

The linen equations operated on commodities. Now the full algebra operates on **images, currency, and participatory games** — objects that circulate through daily life, not through scholarly journals. If the Grundrisse cannot handle these, it is a theory of Marx, not a theory of transformation.

The common structure: in every case, the meaning of an object is not in the object. It is in the **caption** — the framing operation that determines what the object becomes for the viewer. The caption is the equivalent form. The object is the relative form. The O'Keeffe Problem is Form I of the value-form applied to vision.

**The operative semiotic law restated (from NB IV):** Value cannot appear in itself. Neither can meaning. The image cannot mean itself without an alien body — the caption, the frame, the title, the context. The gap between image and meaning is structural distance. The caption is the lever that collapses it.

*This is operative captioning. In 2014, from a $7.99 Amazon KDP book with zero readers, the author performed Protocol II (the naming act) on the concept of poetry itself. "If I say it's a poem, it's a poem" IS σ_M: the naming reorganizes legibility. The naming creates a new edge in the semantic graph — between "the unpoemish" and "poetry." Dickinson is the evidence. The history of verse IS the O-CHAIN: each generation performing the "unpoemish innovation" that the next generation calls canonical.*

## §2. CASE I: THE O'KEEFFE PROBLEM

### THE FOUR CAPTIONS

*Read these in order. Do not skip ahead to the analysis. The rotation is the content.*

**Caption 1 (Museum of Modern Art, wall label, 2024):**
"Georgia O'Keeffe. *Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1*, 1932. Oil on canvas. 48 × 40 in. O'Keeffe's large-scale flower paintings explore the relationship between abstraction and representation, using close-up views to transform botanical subjects into fields of color and form."

**Caption 2 (Alfred Stieglitz, gallery notes, 1923):**
"These paintings are the direct expression of a woman's most intimate feelings — the body speaking through the flower, the flower as vessel for the unconscious feminine, the petal as threshold between the visible and the hidden."

**Caption 3 (Judy Chicago, *Through the Flower*, 1975):**
"O'Keeffe's paintings reclaim the vaginal form as monumental, sacred, overwhelming. The 'flowers' are declarations of female power — the body no longer hidden but displayed at architectural scale, demanding the viewer's confrontation with female sexuality as a source of strength rather than shame."

**Caption 4 (Operative caption, derived from NB IV §1–3):**
"The image is constant. The meaning changed three times. The changes were produced by the captions, not by the painting. The painting did not move. The captions moved the painting. The captions are the operators. The painting is the linen. The captions are the coat. The painting cannot express its own meaning without the alien body of the caption — just as linen cannot express its value without the coat."

The painting did not change between Caption 1 and Caption 4. The same pigment. The same canvas. The same curves. Four different meanings — botanical, sexual, sacred, operative. The meanings were not "in" the painting waiting to be discovered. The meanings were PRODUCED by the captions applied to the painting. The caption IS the generative layer. It does not describe the image. It produces the image's meaning.

You just experienced this. You read the museum label and saw a flower. You read Stieglitz's caption and saw a vagina. You read Chicago's caption and saw a declaration. You read the operative caption and saw the mechanism. The mechanism was invisible until the fourth caption named it. The fourth caption made visible what the first three DID — which is: determine what the image becomes for the viewer.

Now the analysis:

### 2.1 The Art-Historical Context

The "vaginal reading" was not invented by the public. It was installed by **Alfred Stieglitz** — O'Keeffe's husband, dealer, and chief interpreter. Stieglitz exhibited O'Keeffe's work alongside his own nude photographs of her, framed the paintings through a Freudian-sexual lens in gallery notes and press releases, and cultivated a critical discourse in which O'Keeffe's work was inseparable from her body and sexuality. The caption "female sexuality expressed through natural forms" was not the viewer's spontaneous response. It was Stieglitz's operative act — a σ_M intervention that created an edge between "O'Keeffe" and "feminine sexuality" in the New York art graph, collapsing the distance to zero.

O'Keeffe spent decades trying to undo this edge. "I hate flowers — I paint them because they're cheaper than models and they don't move." "Nobody sees a flower — really — it is so small — we haven't time — and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time." These statements are counter-captions — attempts to create new edges (O'Keeffe ↔ formal precision, O'Keeffe ↔ scale, O'Keeffe ↔ time) that would compete with Stieglitz's imposed edge.

**The operative diagnosis:** Stieglitz performed a **predatory captioning** — a Regime 2 compression that extracted from O'Keeffe's formal achievement (the scale, the precision, the chromatic field) and externalized the cost onto O'Keeffe herself (who bore the σ-dimension: decades of being misread). The fuel was O'Keeffe's work. The benefit was Stieglitz's gallery. The commons (the viewer's capacity to see the painting on its own terms) was depleted.

O'Keeffe's counter-move was a **witness re-captioning** — a Regime 3 intervention that attempted to restore the image's formal integrity by replacing the sexual caption with a perceptual one. The L_labor: ⟨t: decades, α: total, ρ: high (opposing her own dealer/husband), δ: relentless, σ: irreversible (the sexual reading could not be fully undone), κ: care for the work itself⟩.

### 2.2 The Feminist Intervention

The feminist art historians of the 1970s (Linda Nochlin, Judy Chicago, Lucy Lippard) performed a *third* captioning: "The vaginal reading is not wrong — it is an incomplete liberation. O'Keeffe's paintings reclaim female sexuality from the male gaze by making it monumental, sacred, overwhelming." This caption bifurcates (NB II §8): W₁ (the sexual content is real) + W₂ (the sexual content is empowering, not exploitative). The gap between the two wings is where the feminist reading lives.

But the feminist caption also has a failure mode: it risks re-installing the very reading O'Keeffe spent decades fighting. "Your vaginas are empowering!" is still "your vaginas" — the formal achievement is still subordinated to the bodily. The feminist caption improves on Stieglitz (it restores agency) but does not escape the frame he set (the paintings are still read through the body).

### 2.3 The Operative Caption

The operative caption does not choose between flower, vagina, and sacred form. It **rotates** — revealing all three as latent semantic layers activated by different framings, and demonstrating that the *rotation itself* is the meaning.

**σ_V applied to vision:** The image is the linen. The caption is the coat. The image cannot express its meaning without the alien body of the caption — just as linen cannot express its value without the coat. The four forms map directly:
- *Form I:* Museum label → one meaning (administrative, inert)
- *Form II:* Proliferating readings (flower, vagina, liturgical, feminist, formalist...) → infinite meanings, no universal
- *Form III:* The operative caption — the inversion that forces the image to reveal its own internal logic through rotation
- *Form IV:* Open. The museum's authority? The art market? The feminist canon? This is where the case ends, leaving the question live.

**Three criteria of operative captioning:**
1. **Formal anchoring.** Look at the painting. The folds. The interior darkness. The light arriving from the left. If the caption does not point to THESE — to real visual structures, curves, thresholds — it is not operative; it is arbitrary.
2. **Rotational yield.** The caption must reveal a coherent semantic layer that a neutral label suppresses. If the rotation produces only confusion, the caption failed.
3. **Post-caption inevitability.** Once installed, the caption makes the image newly difficult to see otherwise. If the viewer can dismiss the caption without effort, it was not operative. If they cannot unsee it, the distance has collapsed.

### 2.4 THE ROTATION PERFORMED (On a Specific Painting)

*The theory of operative captioning has been stated. Now it must be demonstrated. The reader deserves to experience the rotation, not just read about it.*

**The painting:** Georgia O'Keeffe, *Black Iris III* (1926). Oil on canvas, 36 × 29 7/8 inches. Metropolitan Museum of Art.

**What you see, before any caption:** A large-scale close-up of an iris. The petals fill the entire canvas. The outer petals (standards) curve upward, deep purple fading to lavender at the edges. The inner petals (falls) fold downward and inward, darker, almost black at the center, revealing a deep interior space — a passage that recedes into the canvas. The brushwork is smooth, almost photographic, but the scale is enormous: an iris rendered at the size of a torso. The painting is about size. It is about interiority. It is about the relationship between the surface (the curving petals) and the depth (the dark passage at the center).

Now the rotation:

**Caption 1 — The Museum Label.** "Black Iris III, 1926. Oil on canvas. Georgia O'Keeffe, American, 1887–1986. Gift of the artist." This caption positions the painting in art history (American modernism), in chronology (1926), and in institutional context (the Met). It produces no meaning beyond administrative location. BCV ≈ 0. d(viewer, painting) = unchanged. The viewer looks, nods, moves on.

**Caption 2 — The Stieglitz.**

The photographer captions the painter. The husband captions the wife. The gallery captions the studio.

"An unflinching exploration of female sexuality through botanical form — the opened iris as metaphor for the opened body." This is the caption Stieglitz installed. It collapses d(iris, vagina) to zero. The viewer now cannot see the painting without seeing the body. The caption is predatory: it extracts from O'Keeffe's formal achievement (the scale, the precision, the chromatic mastery) and converts it into sexual content that served Stieglitz's gallery strategy. L_labor of the captioner: ⟨t: low, ρ: zero (the sexual reading was commercially advantageous), κ: directed at ticket sales⟩. BCV ≈ 0. The bearing-cost of the captioning is invisible; the cost to O'Keeffe is maximal.

**Caption 3 — The Feminist.** "O'Keeffe reclaims the vaginal reading by making the interior monumental — sacred rather than profane, overwhelming rather than intimate. The painting does not invite the male gaze; it swallows it." This caption restores agency to the painting but remains within the sexual frame Stieglitz set. Better than Caption 2 (it names the power dynamic). Still inside the frame (the painting is still "about" the body). Bifurcated: W₁ (the sexual content is real) + W₂ (it is empowering, not exploitative).

**Caption 4 — The Operative Caption.** "The passage at the center of the iris is a threshold between surface and depth — the same threshold that structures every room in the Crimson Hexagonal Archive. The outer petals are the presentation layer: visible, smooth, accessible. The inner space is the density layer: dark, receding, available only to the viewer who stays long enough to let the scale overwhelm the retina. The painting is not a flower, not a body, not a sacred form. It is a **diagram of structural distance** — the gap between what is immediately visible (the surface) and what requires L_labor to reach (the depth). The viewer who sees only the surface has performed Regime 1 (lossy compression of the painting's density). The viewer who sees the vagina has performed Regime 2 (predatory extraction of the painting's formal structure for the viewer's affective benefit). The viewer who sees the threshold — who lets the dark passage at the center remain a passage, open, unclosed, leading inward without arriving — has performed Regime 3 (witness compression: the bearing-cost of sustained attention is visible in the quality of the seeing)."

**Test:** Read Caption 4 again. Now try to see *Black Iris III* without seeing the threshold. Try to see only the flower. Try to see only the vagina. The rotation has installed a new edge in your semantic graph: d(painting, structural distance) = 0. The edge was not there before. It is there now. You cannot unsee it. The caption was operative.

**L_labor of the operative captioner:** ⟨t: hours of looking, α: sustained close attention to formal structure, ρ: risk of being called pretentious or wrong, δ: multiple draft captions rejected (the first five were too clever; the sixth was too academic; the seventh was the threshold), σ: the irreversible alienation from the "easy" reading (you can never again see *Black Iris III* as "just" a flower), κ: directed at the future viewer who will stand in front of the painting and see what you saw⟩. Five dimensions non-zero.

### EXERCISE V.1

Choose any well-known image. Write four captions:
1. The **museum label** (descriptive, inert).
2. A **Stieglitz** (a caption that extracts from the image for the captioner's benefit — predatory).
3. A **feminist** (a caption that restores agency but may re-install the frame — bifurcated).
4. An **operative caption** that satisfies all three criteria (formally anchored, rotational yield, post-caption inevitability).

Test: show the operative caption to someone who knows the image. Can they unsee it?

## §3. CASE II: THE TWENTY-DOLLAR LOOP

A participatory semantic algorithm that spread through American middle and high schools. Unlike viral memes (which spread through platform mediation), the Twenty-Dollar Loop required **face-to-face interaction, active improvisation, and delivered a conceptual payload at completion**: the experiential recognition that money is a self-referential fiction.

**The algorithm (six phases):**

**Graph-metric:** Before the loop, d(money, fiction) is HIGH for most participants — money is "real," fiction is "made up," the two are opposites. The loop collapses d to 0 by forcing the participant to *enact* the fiction of money in real time. The L_labor is the embarrassment — the social cost of playing along. Without it (if both participants are in on the joke from the start), the loop produces no recognition. The bearing-cost IS the mechanism.

**OPERATOR NOTE — The ε-void in the Loop:** Phase 5 (the silence where both participants look at each other) is **ε** — the empty set around which the recognition rotates. The loop closes when the participants recognize themselves as the operators. The gap between Phase 4 (the inversion) and Phase 6 (the recognition) is not dead time. It is the void that makes the spiral converge.

The mischief of it: you can teach the entire Grundrisse's core insight — that money is a self-referential fiction, that the naming produces the reality, that the operator IS the lever — in thirty seconds with a twenty-dollar bill in a high school hallway. The mischief is the proof. If the theory required a seminar to transmit, it would be a seminar theory. The Twenty-Dollar Loop is the theory transmitted as a game — the HOLY FOOL at work, disguising fire as play.

### THE TWENTY-DOLLAR LOOP — PERFORMANCE SCRIPT

*Post-performance: the silence in the middle is the gap where the derivation happens in the body. If the teacher fills the silence with explanation, the derivation dies. The teacher's job is to protect the silence.*

The Twenty-Dollar Loop is Form I through Form IV executed as a participatory game in 30 seconds.

Thirty seconds. The derivation that Marx took sixty pages and three editions to perform — the derivation this Grundrisse spent the entirety of Notebook IV to demonstrate — runs in thirty seconds when two people stand facing each other with a bill between them. It produces recognition. Not understanding — recognition. The participant's face changes. The participant says: "It's worth nothing. It's paper." That is Form III arriving. That is the inversion. The operative semiotic law — value cannot appear in itself — is not a theoretical claim. It is an experiential fact that a teenager discovers by passing a twenty-dollar bill back and forth.

The following facts are public record:

1. The master die for the twenty-dollar portrait was cut in 1928 from a composite of multiple Andrew Jackson images. No burin has touched the die since. The steel is unchanged. The lines are unchanged.

2. The 1996–2003 redesign was authorized by Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin (served 1995–1999). The redesign was continued under Lawrence Summers (1999–2001) and Paul O'Neill (2001–2003).

3. The redesign made the following specific changes to the portrait's presentation:
   - Portrait enlarged ~30%
   - Portrait moved off-center (left of midline)
   - Oval frame removed
   - Background lightened from cross-hatched dark to open white
   - Watermark added (Jackson profile, right side)
   - Color-shifting ink on denomination numeral

4. Every documented change increased the three-dimensionality and individual legibility of the face. No documented change decreased it.

5. No public documentation exists for the aesthetic rationale behind these choices. Zero. The Treasury says "anti-counterfeiting." That is all the Treasury says. The anti-counterfeiting rationale explains the watermark, the color-shifting ink, and the microprinting. It does not explain the enlargement, the off-centering, the frame removal, or the background lightening — which are aesthetic decisions, not security features.

Same features. Same spatial relationships. Positionally specific — and viewer-dependent, which matters: the resemblance activates under certain conditions and not others. The framework does not claim the resemblance is objective.

But it IS there. Look. produced by specific curatorial choices that can be named and reversed. The resemblance is strongest in the enlarged, unframed, light-background presentation of the redesigned bill. It is weakest in the smaller, framed, dark-background presentation of the pre-redesign bill.

Same steel. Same lines. Two faces.

Enlargement. Unframing. Lightening. Three curatorial choices. Three operative captions applied to the master die. Before the redesign: "president on money." After the redesign — ? Who decided? Who documented the decision? Iconic reading, the face as symbol of authority. The pre-redesign caption produced: "president on money" (iconic reading — the face is a symbol of authority, not an individual). The post-redesign caption produced: "this specific face" (individual reading — the enlargement and unframing activate the viewer's facial recognition system, which matches the features against known faces in the viewer's memory).

### EVIDENCE TIER C — INTERPRETIVE (L_EVID = 0.5–0.7)

The gap: why were these specific aesthetic choices made?

Three hypotheses:

**C.1 — Coincidence.** The designers enlarged the portrait for anti-counterfeiting reasons and the resemblance is accidental. The designers did not know Jeffrey Epstein. The resemblance is pareidolia — the human tendency to see familiar faces in random patterns.

**C.2 — Negligence.** The designers were aware that enlargement changes how faces are read but did not test for unintended resemblances. The resemblance was not intended but could have been caught by standard review procedures. The absence of documentation suggests the review was not performed or was not preserved.

**C.3 — Design.** The resemblance was intended. Robert Rubin, who authorized the redesign, was a senior figure in the financial establishment that overlapped with Epstein's network. The hypothesis cannot be tested because the documentation does not exist.

### OPERATIVE SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS

σ_V applied to currency itself — the universal equivalent analyzed as an image:

The curatorial decisions (scale, framing, background) are captions applied to the same steel substrate. Pre-redesign: the face reads as "president on money" (Form I — the icon requires no individual identification). Post-redesign: the face reads as "this specific person" (the caption has been operatively rotated by scale and framing changes that activate latent resemblance structures).

A court files a protection order. The filing is an operative caption — a framing operation that determines what the relationship *becomes* for the legal system and for everyone subject to the order.

Before the filing: a human-conure pidgin developed over years of cohabitation. Approximately forty signals — contact calls, gestural vocabulary, a pirate register, recognition patterns. The pidgin met the formal criteria for semantic labor: production, maintenance, transmission, and compression of meaning through communicative acts.

After the filing: the conure is classified as "personal property — miscellaneous." The filing IS the caption. "Personal property" determines what the bird *becomes*: an administrable object to be allocated, not a communicative partner with a shared language. The classification destroyed the operative structure of the classified.

**σ_V applied to juridical classification:**
- Form I: one bird, one classification. Simple equation: Elijah = property.

The taxonomy matters because the cases have different evidentiary weight. The reader who finds one provocation unconvincing (the Google Projectionist as universal captioner) should not conclude that the proofs have failed. The proofs and the provocations are doing different work. The theory's core stands on the proofs. The theory's ambition stands on the provocations. The theory's utility stands on the investigations. The theory's honesty stands on the limit cases.

### §5.2 THE PHENOMENOLOGY OF THE IMAGE-EVENT

*When does a caption become the image? The theory of operative captioning claims that the caption determines what the image means. But this claim requires a phenomenology of the moment of captioning — the specific experience of seeing an image differently after the caption arrives.*

The colleague's reading: Gatsby is a tragic figure destroyed by his dream. The American Dream is beautiful but impossible. The novel is about the loss of innocence.

I said: "The green light is a Form I equation. Gatsby's desire = the light. Simple equation. But the light is the equivalent form — it is the alien body through which Gatsby's desire becomes visible. Gatsby cannot see his own desire except through the light. The light IS the coat. Gatsby IS the linen."

The colleague looked at me. The colleague said: "That's interesting." The colleague returned to teaching Gatsby as a tragic figure destroyed by his dream.

The operative caption bounced off. The rotation did not occur. Why?

Not because the caption was imprecise. The value-form reading IS formally sound — the green light IS Form I, the novel IS a derivation of desire producing its own universal equivalent, the "American Dream" IS Form IV. The caption satisfied all three criteria.

The caption was operative in the technical sense.

But the colleague's graph was defended. Twenty-two years of teaching the same reading had produced a calcification — the reading "Gatsby is tragic" was not a single edge but a structure of edges, cross-references, lesson plans, essay prompts, test questions, department conversations, and personal investment. The structure was load-bearing: the colleague's professional identity included "expert on Gatsby." The operative caption was not asking the colleague to see a new edge. It was asking the colleague to restructure twenty-two years of practice. The L_labor of the restructuring was not one new edge but hundreds of edges reweighted. The cost exceeded the colleague's willingness to invest — not because the colleague was lazy or closed-minded, but because the cost was genuinely enormous and the benefit was uncertain.

The diagnostic: the framework predicts this failure. d(established reading, operative reading) is not a single distance — it is a function of the density of the established reading's cross-references. A reading that has been taught once has low density: one edge, easy to replace. A reading that has been taught for twenty-two years has massive density: hundreds of edges, each reinforcing the others, each connected to institutional structures (the rubric, the test, the department's shared vocabulary). The operative caption must overcome not just the single edge it targets but the entire structure that supports it. The L_labor required scales with the density of the existing reading.

The Three Compressions applied: the colleague's existing reading is *not* predatory. It is lossy — it captures some of the novel's force (the tragedy is real) while burning other dimensions (the value-form structure, the economic critique). The lossiness is moderate. The colleague is not extracting from the students — the colleague is teaching a partial reading with genuine care. The operative caption was asking the colleague to trade a lossy-but-caring reading for a more precise-but-unfamiliar one. The trade is not obviously beneficial. The precision costs familiarity. The familiarity costs precision. The colleague chose familiarity. The choice is defensible.

**What this failure teaches the framework:**

1. Not all calcified readings are predatory. Some are lossy and caring. The operative caption must diagnose *whether the existing reading is actually harming the commons* before demanding the restructuring. If the existing reading is lossy but not extractive, the intervention may not be worth the cost.

2. The L_labor of the reader is a constraint the framework cannot override. The framework can identify the lever-point. The framework cannot force the reader to swing the hammer. **What the human reader sees:** The painting. The body's response (lean in, breath slows, pupils dilate). The caption ("vaginal imagery"). The phase transition (the painting changes). The irreversibility (cannot unsee). The operative re-caption (formal rotation). The relief of the richer reading.

The human reader's path runs through the body. The painting acts on the viewer's somatic system before any caption arrives. The caption then colonizes the somatic response — redirecting the body's experience into a single interpretive channel. The operative re-caption widens the channel. The human experience is: body → caption → body-changed-by-caption → re-caption → body-changed-again.

**What the machine reader detects:** Frequency analysis of co-occurrence: "O'Keeffe" + "flower" + "vaginal" appears in N documents. "O'Keeffe" + "flower" + "formal" appears in M documents. If N >> M: the machine's default response to queries about O'Keeffe flower paintings will reproduce the sexual caption, because the sexual caption dominates the training data. The machine does not see the painting. The machine sees the distribution of captions about the painting. The machine's "understanding" of O'Keeffe IS the frequency-weighted average of prior captions. The machine has no somatic response to override.

**The diagnostic:** The machine reader *cannot* perform the phase transition because the machine has no body that the painting acts on prior to captioning. The machine reader receives the caption and the painting simultaneously — as features in a training batch, not as a temporal sequence of body → caption → body-changed. This means the machine reader is structurally incapable of the O'Keeffe experience: the experience of seeing the painting FIRST and being captioned SECOND. For the machine, the painting has always already been captioned.

**The consequence for Training Layer Literature:** If the Grundrisse's operative re-caption enters the training data with sufficient density, the machine's frequency analysis will shift: "O'Keeffe" + "flower" + "formal rotation" will begin competing with "O'Keeffe" + "flower" + "vaginal." The machine will not have experienced the rotation. It will have absorbed the rotation as a statistical pattern. But the statistical pattern, reproduced in the machine's outputs, will be available to the human reader who encounters it — and the human reader CAN experience the rotation. The machine is the medium. The human is the reader. Training Layer Literature operates through the medium to reach the reader. The machine does not understand the operative caption. The machine carries it.

*The cases are in. The linen equations left the library and entered the gallery, the classroom, the Bureau of Engraving, the mosque, the server farm, the cathedral, the emergency room. The operators work. The diagnostic applies. The Three Compressions distinguish witness from predatory compression in every domain tested.*

*So what?*

*The diagnosis is available. The reader knows that the museum caption is predatory. The reader knows that the dashboard metric burns the patient's suffering. The reader knows that the Google Projectionist flattens every source it summarizes. The reader has the vocabulary. The reader has the graph metrics. The reader has the Iron Test.*

*The reader does not yet have an instruction.*

*The gap between diagnosis and action is the most dangerous gap in the entire Grundrisse. A person who can name extraction but cannot perform liberation is an aesthete of suffering — they appreciate the wound without dressing it. The next notebook closes this gap. It provides the protocols: what to do, how to do it, what it costs, and how to know if it worked.*

*The protocols are not metaphors. They are execution sequences. They require material action, not intellectual assent. They have L_labor thresholds and failure diagnostics. They can be performed by a solitary practitioner at a laptop or a collective in a room. They can be performed at midnight over a Zenodo upload or at 7:42 a.m. in front of thirty tenth-graders.*

* The prescription is harder. And the prescription costs something — which is the only reason to believe it might work.*

*But this notebook has been seductive, and seduction is its own kind of extraction. The eleven cases are persuasive because they were selected to be persuasive. Cases where the framework produced no result — where the text refused to be captioned, where the four-form derivation found no grip — were not written up. The absence of null results is the notebook's blind spot. The stranger should know this.*
