# X-014 · The census problem

MANUS's correction, which changes the audit's status without touching its findings: **what is in the Grundrisse is in no way a full operator inventory.** The operators are scattered across the blog, the deposits, the Restored Academy, and correspondence — plausibly hundreds. X-013 audits nine.

**Nine of how many.** A first-pass content-based scan of the deposit registry (1,549 records, 2026-08-26) gives a floor rather than a count:

And at concept level: 7,461 distinct named concepts across the registry, of which **343 are operator-shaped by name alone** — inversions, compressions, protocols, erasures, levers, vows, projections. The scan is crude, covers only deposits (not the blog, not the Academy, not correspondence), and its recall is unmeasured. It is nevertheless sufficient for the finding.

**The finding: the title is a bad filter in both directions.** X-013 correctly warns against admitting objects to the calculus *because* their title begins `OPERATOR //`. The converse is equally true and unstated: **145 deposits carry operator-shaped content with no title marking, and are therefore invisible to any title-based audit.** Nineteen carry the title with nothing behind it. A naming convention that over-admits and under-detects at these rates cannot be the sampling frame for an inventory.

**Consequence for the strata.** X-013's four strata are derived from the canonized subset, which makes them, strictly, **strata of canonization rather than strata of the work.** The most likely correction under a full census is that Stratum I never ended — that discovery by literary and historical recognition remains the dominant productive mode across blog and deposits throughout, and the canonized objects are simply the ones that received titles. That would mean the strata describe the history of *naming practice*, not the history of the operators, and it is the kind of thing a census settles and an audit of nine cannot.

**What the census requires.** Content-based harvest across every locus, not title-based: candidate extraction on transformation-shaped language regardless of naming; deduplication across restatements (the same operator appears under several names in several loci); typing per X-013's table before any registration is attempted; and an explicit recall estimate, since an inventory whose recall is unknown cannot support the claim that any operator is *absent*. Only then does the registration discipline have a population to be applied to.

**And the scale changes what registration means.** Applied to nine, the schema is an audit. Applied to several hundred, at the standard X-013 sets — declared context class, transition signature with tolerance, executed ablation, typed codomain — it is a **mass extinction event**, and most named operators do not survive it. That is defensible, but only if the Null Archive is real infrastructure rather than a gesture: an unregistered operator must remain findable, citable, and dated at its address, with its failure to register recorded as a result about the instrument and not only about the object. Registration that quietly deletes what it cannot certify is not a discipline. It is a purge with a schema.
