Marx's value-form across editions: Form IV and editors in Marx's name

These historical theses read Capital's value-form derivation across its editions: the first-edition appendix performs Forms I to IV explicitly, while the 1872 text keeps the polar rule for a single expression and drops the only form in which the system-level consequence was written. They hold that Form IV voids the socially valid display of magnitude and resolves into the fetish, and that the theory of the medium stands at an editorial cut in Capital as it stands at the lost notebook of the 1844 manuscripts. Backhaus's pre-monetary misreading, Engels's interventions, the 1932 Landshut–Mayer edition and the philological quarantine of early manuscripts are read as editing in Marx's name.

Backhaus's 1969 essay "On the Dialectic of the Value-Form" argues that the entire reception history of Marx's economic theory — including in the Marxist tradition — is based on a "pre-monetary" misinterpretation initiated by Engels's editorial interventions.

- Capital, first edition (1867): Two versions — a sharply dialectical treatment in the chapter text, and a simplified version in the Appendix written at the urging of Engels and Kugelmann. The chapter text contains a "Form IV" that is not the money-form but a paradoxical form that refuses to close. Marx wrote in the first edition Preface: "It's difficult to understand, because the dialectic is much sharper than in the first presentation" (MEGA II/5:12).

Test: If a hostile reader — an economist who thinks Marx is wrong about everything — reads only this passage, do they have to admit that something has been seen here that they had not seen? If yes: cathedral. If they can dismiss it as "literary criticism with Greek letters": not yet.

The appendix performs the derivation in four numbered forms — I through IV — with an explicitness that the later editions smooth over. In the appendix, Marx shows his work. The reader can see each step of the progressive graph simplification. The transitions are labored, difficult, sometimes repetitive — and the difficulty IS the content. The value-form derivation is not "hard to understand" because Marx was a bad writer. It is hard because the operation it describes is hard: the emergence of a universal equivalent from a structure that does not logically require one.

From r.06: "The value-form does not describe value. The value-form produces value through the formal operation of equating two commodities. This is the Hexagon's unique contribution to Marx studies." If this is right, then: (a) all readings of Capital that treat the value-form as descriptive (not productive) are wrong; (b) all readings that separate form from content in Marx are wrong; (c) all readings that treat money as a neutral medium rather than an operator are wrong.

The German is sharper: Die Philosophen haben die Welt nur verschieden interpretiert; es kömmt drauf an, sie zu verändern. The nur ("only") is doing the work — it converts all prior philosophy into a preparation for this sentence. The es kömmt drauf an is not "the point is" but something closer to "what it comes down to" — a colloquial urgency, a street-corner exhortation written in a notebook Marx never published, in a set of theses he scrawled in Brussels in the spring of 1845 and then set aside. The notebook was found after Marx's death.

X-M11. Philological quarantine (X.01 × X.07 / O1) The systematic structural isolation of early or divergent manuscript layers to prevent the compiled canonical settlement from collapsing. The 1844 Manuscripts and the raw drafts of The German Ideology are quarantined from the canonical Marx — not because they are wrong, but because they are dangerous to the editorial apparatus.

Form IV operates one level up: it runs every expression simultaneously and reads the resulting system reflexively. No individual equation breaks the polar rule. The system does something the polar rule does not govern, and what it does is void the socially valid display of magnitude.

It fails if the reflexive structure can be shown to be already implied by Forms I–III, such that Form IV adds no writable state.

What 1872 keeps is the prohibition that governs a single expression of value; what it drops is the only form in which the system-level consequence was written. In §1 of the 1872 text Marx raises the back-reference explicitly — 20 Ellen Leinwand = 1 Rock also implies 1 Rock = 20 Ellen Leinwand — and immediately disciplines it: invert the equation and linen becomes the equivalent instead of the coat, so the same commodity cannot occupy both positions. The reflexive move is acknowledged at the level where it is harmless and foreclosed there. The level at which it is not harmless has no form left to write it in.

That essay develops the principle on the supply side, where the Landshut–Mayer edition of 1932 printed as Marx's a manuscript that does not exist, carried no mark, and was the edition that circulated.

In the Paris manuscripts of 1844, the claims about the medium of meaning — language given to every thinker as a social product, the element of thought itself as sensuous in nature, general consciousness capable of becoming an abstraction from real life that confronts it with hostility — stand at the edge of the physical hole where the second notebook was lost, and Marx never developed them. In Capital, the form that would describe a monetary body carrying meaning stands at an editorial cut. Different mechanisms, same location. The theory of the medium is at the cut in both cases.

On the present reading, Form IV resolves into the fetish. When the socially valid display of magnitude fails, what the analysis reaches for next is the object whose social relations appear as properties of the thing — and the register in which it reaches is theological, in Marx's own word, at this locus.
