Nothing Before Us: Sophistical Refutations 34 and the deleted particle

Historical theses from The Particle and Nothing Before Us that the ending of the Sophistical Refutations says nothing of syllogizing came before Aristotle, Socrates' syllogizing included. They argue that the deleted particle at 183b34 is a provenance claim, that reception restored provenance from others by deleting it, and that the degree-reading (nothing systematic) is not attested before the modern period. The page also holds the standing claim that transmitting-antecedent reconciliations fail the paper's prohibitions and the pre-submission checklist of line references still to verify against the print edition.

PRED-3.H19historical thesisregistered 2026-06-17 in #3 · AI Overview Capture Registry v8.3
The paper's thesis is that the sentence οὐδὲν παντελῶς ὑπῆρχεν means what it says and that the figure the qualification protects, 'Socrates as a predecessor from whom something of the inquiry was received', is one the chapter has already dissolved. The composition delivers the reading the paper refutes, under the paper's title. Operator: 'its actively erasing the sophistical refutations arguments.'

  2. PRED-1603.H1 · 2026-09-08 — From the Particle note's single proposition (Socrates' syllogizing is included in the 'nothing prior', left open as a placement) to Nothing Before Us's thesis that the qualification's figure, Socrates as predecessor from whom something was received, is dissolved by the chapter; #3 is registered 2026-06-17, before both #1574 and #1603, but carries the later form, so development order is kept.
  3. PRED-1603.H2 · 2026-09-08 — Scope widened: Socrates is placed inside the explanation of the inquiry's second task and his questioning asserted as its structural beginning, with inclusion in the first person left open.
  4. PRED-1611.H2 · 2026-09-14 — Compressed into the negative-ontology table: Socrates inside the inquiry's originating work, with the received placement as external predecessor recorded as the negation.

#1574 · 2026-09-02 One proposition, throughout, in the text's own words: nothing prior of syllogizing includes Socrates' syllogizing. The chapter's "prior" is παρ᾽ ἑτέρων; Socrates is inside the definition; nothing of the inquiry was from others; a beginning does not come in parts. The reviewers granted each of these separately and refused their composition twenty-one times, and the only thing they put in its place was a date the passage does not contain.
#1603 · 2026-09-08 I argue that the sentence means what it says; that the closing chapter is built, joint by joint, so that it can be kept; and that the figure the qualification exists to protect — Socrates as a predecessor from whom something of the inquiry was received — is a figure the chapter itself has already dissolved.
#1603 · 2026-09-08 That Socrates is placed inside the explanation of the inquiry's second task, the sentence establishes. That his position is the structural beginning — questioning without the profession of knowledge, from which the task of answering ὡς εἰδώς takes its point — the role contrast, the order, and the Μ 4 concord — the seeker of syllogizing at the ἀρχή of syllogisms, before the capacity existed — argue, and I assert.

# NOTHING-SE34 — pre-submission checklist (not part of the note) Removed from the paper's surface at v0.4 and parked here. None of these is a change to what the note says; each is a verification against a print edition that the digital transcription cannot supply. 1. Every Bekker line reference against the OCT margin (Ross 1958). v0.9 adds five first-person-verb locations in §1 (προειλόμεθα 183a37, ὑπεθέμεθα 183b3, εἰρήκαμεν 183b6, διεληλύθαμεν 183b13) and line splits inside 183b17–33 (b17–19, b22–23, b29–33) that were assigned from the transcription.

This note argues that Sophistical Refutations 184b1–2 says that there was nothing of syllogizing prior to Aristotle. In support it argues that 183b34–36 says that the inquiry was not partly worked out beforehand and partly not, but that nothing at all was there; that 183b36–184a8 says that the teachers of eristic arguments gave the things from the art and not the art; and that 184b1–8 says that rhetoric had much and old material, and that the method is to be judged from the conditions it began from. The evidence is the sentences.

The deleted particle is a provenance claim. The chapter defines "worked out beforehand" as παρ᾽ ἑτέρων — from others (183b17). The sentence with οὐ says: of this inquiry, nothing was received from others. The sentence without οὐ says: some of it was. What the reception restores, at the cost of the particle, is provenance from others: Socrates before, Plato before, the dialogues as predecessors, the inquiry as inheritance. The received account of the founding of logic is the sentence's denied member.

The transmitting-antecedent reconciliations examined here — Socrates as the predecessor from whom part of this was received, in any of their forms — fail these prohibitions: they restore the excluded transmission (P3, P5, P9), insert the adequacy threshold (P7), or file participation as provision (P6).

It follows, and this closes the reading, that Socrates' questioning, as enacted by this ending, is not artless participation: it is the completed art exercising its capacity on the reader. The artless share of chapter 11 is what everyone does without the art; what the ending does with Socrates' questioning is the art's own culminating exercise, and a form the completed art takes at its achievement is not a form the art lacks. That is a claim about the operation as the ending performs it, not a claim that an artful enactment settles, retrospectively, its named practitioner's possession of the art — which §6 leaves open and §9 does not close.

Whether the word then migrates from the instruction to a gloss on nothing is a hypothesis about transmission, not a documented step; a later quotation performing the transfer would establish it, and none is seated yet.

Socrates is inside the inquiry's originating work: 183b7–8 gives his asking-without-answering as a reason (διὰ τοῦτο) internal to the undertaking; the ending's last question is his operation performed on the reader.
