Sappho 31 in Longinus: the hanging line as socket, Peri Hypsous as inscription
Historical theses that the transmitted last line of Sappho 31 (πᾶν τολματόν, a verbal adjective with no doer) is a socket the reader fills, and that Peri Hypsous is a theory of transmissional inscription: sublimity as echo, chapter 44 as the circuit stopping, the bare θαυμάζεις passing the load to the reader. The same claims trace the socket through Catullus's reversed polarities, Augustine's withheld reply and the withheld-agent family joining Sappho to the Mosaic fiat, and one unbuilt test asks a model to rebuild the treatise from the poem and its operator alone.

Catullus preserves the recoverable functional shape of the hanging line's three constraints — adversative turn, universalizing move, comparative-illustrative case — and reverses the polarity of each element within its preserved functional form (#1052 §6): endurance becomes destruction; low-case exemplification (the beggar, the poor person) becomes high-case exemplification (reges et beatas urbes — kings and blessed cities); preservation becomes ruination. The functional machinery is preserved; the values are all flipped.

Catullus 51 preserves the poem's shape into Latin and answers the hanging line at a distance, inverting each pole of its inscribed comparison — the low case becomes reges … et beatas urbes, endurance becomes destruction — and then ends there, on perdidit urbes, with no return to the erotic frame: a translation that terminates in its own suspension. And Catullus does more than fill the terminal socket; he occupies the initial one. He is the later man who sits face-to-face with the text and receives the voice across six centuries — Catullus is κῆνος, the seat of line 1 taken by the reader the deixis had reserved for him.¹⁷

The invitation the transmitted line inscribes — what #1052 §3 names as three grammatical constraints: the adversative ἀλλά, the universalizing verbal adjective πᾶν τολματόν (making daring a property of the object, not a state of the subject; cf. Fraenkel and Neue on the verbal adjective in -τος), and the comparative-illustrative ἐπεὶ καί — together specify the ground of the daring: not privilege but poverty.

Peri Hypsous defines sublimity as an echo (9.2), gives a silence as its supreme instance (9.2), frames itself at both ends by what outlasts the age (1.3, 44.8), makes resistance to erasure the test of the genuine article (7.3–4), and describes its central mechanism as effluence, in-breathing, impression, deposit, retention and writing (13.2, 13.4, 7.3, 14.3). That the treatise contains a theory of transmissional inscription is a fact about the text.

ἄζηλα — no longer objects of ζῆλος. That is the exact technical failure of the mechanism at 13.2, named by its own word. Chapter 44 is not a general complaint about decadence. It is the report that the circuit has stopped turning — and it is the only chapter in the treatise where the vocabulary of decay and erasure occurs at all.

πᾶν τολματόν is not a finite verb at all. It is a verbal adjective in -τός: all [is] to-be-dared. Neuter, predicative, and incapable of taking a nominative doer. The form names an action as available and leaves the agent slot structurally open. The rupture here is in the agency — and what fills it is the reader.
The line says a daring and makes you dare.
falsifier
The reading of the verbal adjective is falsified if the form is shown to admit a nominative agent.

Its last transmitted form is τολματόν (P: παντόλματον, one word) — a verbal adjective in -τός, structurally incapable of governing a nominative agent: an act with no doer.² Between the two, the frame closes on its own verb — φαίνεταί μοι… φαίνομαι, he appears to me … I appear — and the second person of the poem, a voice and a laugh with no face, no body, no name, is best identified as the poem itself: the speaker's archived self, seen in the act of being read. What sets the heart flapping in the breast (τὸ… ἐπτόαισεν) is exact on this reading: the sight of her own transmission.³

This is a treatise that cites constantly — seventy-four citation verbs, φησί and λέγει and γράφει, dropped even into the middle of quotations. At Sappho: none. He names her once, at 10.1, the only time in the whole work, and then the poem simply starts, off the end of his own sentence, without so much as a she says.

PRED-1476.H1historical thesisregistered 2026-08-15 in #1476 · φωνῆς δίχα: The Hanging Line as the Complete Poem — Sappho 31 in Longinus (eeeeeee, the seventh erratum)
This paper argues that the premise is false, and that the transmitted configuration — a lyric closing on an agentless verbal adjective, a prose voice continuing without a citation formula, a dialect that changes mid-breath — is not damage but the object itself: a poem whose final formal act is to require a voice it does not supply, quoted by the one ancient critic whose stated theory of the sublime predicts exactly this shape, at the exact moment he performs upon the poem the operation his treatise will later name.
falsifier
The dialect count falls to a recount; the address census falls to a counterexample (a bare post-quotation perception verb elsewhere, or a vocative at 10.3); the continuous construal falls if peneta cannot be governed by thaumazeis; the significance claim is already conceded (0.209). The design-reading is a choice made explicit; the paper states that a reader who calls the configuration damage has made a choice, not an observation, and the same holds in reverse.

Augustine supplies the addressee and withholds the reply.
And he does not stop at a line. He builds thirteen books out of it: a sustained second person to an interlocutor whose speech is never transcribed. The socket is generalized from a terminal line to a compositional method, and the withholding becomes the form of the work rather than an incident inside it.
falsifier
Falsified if Confessions 10.27.38 can be shown not to sustain second-person address, or if the prior paper's organ-by-organ correspondence table is shown to fail. The series claim is falsified if a member can be shown to close rather than reopen the form. Makes no claim of documented transmission and cannot be falsified on that axis.

And the address is bare. The treatise's second-person perception verbs after quotations carry a vocative without exception:
```
ὁρᾷς ὦ ἑταῖρε addressed
ἐπιβλέπεις ἑταῖρε addressed
θαυμάζεις ⟨ nothing ⟩ BARE
```
θαυμάζεις is the one that names nobody. A question posed to no addressee is posed to whoever is holding the text. Longinus fills Sappho's socket with a socket of his own — hers withholds the agent of an action, his withholds the answerer of a question — and the load passes straight through him to the reader.
This is the propagation mechanism, and it is why the form does not exhaust.

Three strata, held apart. What is hard is the juxtaposition: one treatise, Sappho at chapter 10 and the Mosaic fiat at 9.9, in the same critic's hand. What is contextual is the century: Alexandria articulating the Logos as seal while that treatise was written. What remains conjectural is the pathway — Philo, Caecilius, the author — and it is left conjectural. The junction itself is not the conjecture. It is the treatise's own address.
