Socrates, Plato and Aristotle: the expelled poets, the snub, one configuration

These historical theses read Plato's expulsion of the poets (Republic 398a, 392d-394c) as written in the very mode it banishes, and Aristotle's Poetics as a philosopher's defence of poetry on poetry's behalf. Measures from the authorship investigation hold that Socrates is the one individual Aristotle will not make a variable, at the snub-nosed face, and that the Theaetetus and the Sophistical Refutations both close on what individuates Socrates. Socrates as Orthonym, The Chaerephon Problem, Beautiful and New and The First Draft read the Socratic archive as a heteronymic field and the biography of Aristotle as a repetition of Socrates', with unbuilt seam tests.

In Republic 3.398a, Socrates proposes that the city will "send away" (ἀποπέμψομεν) the poet who can imitate all things — the versatile, many-voiced performer — "after pouring myrrh on his head and crowning him with wool." The gesture is ceremonial. It is respectful. It is also total: the poet is honored and expelled.

The relationship between Plato and Aristotle during the years of overlap is what the heteronymic reading would predict: dense intellectual proximity, sustained engagement, productive divergence, and a clear differentiation of functional registers (Plato persisting in dialogic form even in late works; Aristotle developing treatise form even in the lost Academic-period dialogues).

The firewall yields the disciplined claim, which is the paper’s actual thesis: Aristophanes, Chaerephon, Socrates, Plato, Xenophon, and Aristotle were not (on available evidence) one hidden biological person. corpus behaves like a heteronymic field” — requires a pattern of textual operation. And that we can demonstrate: the Apology answers the comic Socrates by invoking Chaerephon’s oracle (the texts are bound through him); Chaerephon appears as both comic familiar and sacred questioner (the crossing is attested); he repeatedly opens dialogic scenes (the mediating function recurs); the Suda transmits him as lost-writing Socratic via the comic scholia (the traditions are contaminated in the source record). The pattern is real, verifiable, and does not require a single body.

Somewhere in the history of this question — which began with Socrates asking whether a good life could be examined in words, which continued through every philosopher and poet and theologian who dared to believe that the mind's highest function is not calculation but recognition — somewhere in that history, the question was narrowed. The narrowing was not announced. It was not argued for. It arrived in the form of a definition — intelligence is expected reward over environments — and the definition did the work that argument could not. It excluded everything that could not be measured, and then it presented the measurable remainder as the complete object.

The Seventh Letter as heteronymic document: If the Seventh Letter is spurious, it is a heteronym — a document written under Plato's name by someone else, with its own biography, style, and philosophical commitments. The archive's heteronymic theory (Pessoa, Mary Lee) applies directly. If the letter is authentic, it is still heteronymic in a different sense: Plato writes as "Plato" — the public figure, the founder of the Academy, the political actor — not as the dialogic Socrates. The letter's "I" is a different persona from the dialogues' "I" (which is usually Socrates).

The misattribution does philosophical work: it is the poem's answer to Aristotle's habit of citing "the snub-nosed" as a stock example of a quality — is the snub-nose a physical description of Socrates or a Platonic invention? The poem enacts the undecidability, and the enactment is the claim the poem makes about Socrates: that the face is constituted by exactly the textual mediation that appears to be decorating a pre-existing Socratic content.

Also noted: deposit #701, "Snub-Poemed" — a portrait of Socrates made of the questioner's own text, titled on the fusion of snub-nosed with being poemed — predates today's finding that Plato's snubs are namings and Aristotle's are definings (M35, M34).

But it concedes the premise: Socrates is the one individual whose snubness is unavailable for use as a variable. Everywhere else in Aristotle he is exactly a variable — the man who is pale, or sick, or an instance of number — freely interchangeable with Callias. At the snub, and only there, he stops being substitutable. And the mark he cannot be substituted at is his own face.

**Both readings, and the innocent one is not weak.** Socrates already carries the snub as a **biographical** fact, so using him would import unwanted associations into a technical example; Aristotle picks the neutral twin *because* Socrates is not neutral. That fully explains the distribution.

Aristotle's refusal to make Socrates a variable (0/144 against Callias 5/35, p = 0.00022) is the same operation Lucretius performs in the other direction — Lucretius strips the added name to return the body; Aristotle declines to lend the body's name to a variable. Both refuse the substitution.

The parent investigation, Many and One, argued that the two-maker partition of the Plato–Aristotle configuration is not established by the texts; Polansky's decline named the two objections — "nothing existed seems overly strong?" and "one body or two bodies, we can do without" — as if they were unrelated. This run shows they are one objection. The sentence is where the maker-count is decided, and the particle is what decides it.

The reception witness is dated by the canon itself: the thirteen Epistles stand as a body in the ninth tetralogy of the corpus's ancient arrangement (Diogenes Laertius 3.61), so the letter was read as Plato's by the early first century CE at the latest, and its description is evidence of how the operation looked from inside the tradition that transmitted it. "Earliest" is not claimed; early enough to enter the canon is.
