Socrates received: Chaerephon, the comic Socrates and the authorship notebook

Historical theses that the Socrates of the corpus answers a prior, comic Socrates, that comedy supplied the position's notoriety and the later corpus its operation, and that Chaerephon's biographical record descends from the scholia to Clouds 144. The Chaerephon Problem reads him as a recurring authorial function, and The First Draft sorts him as a datum for the received-character operation rather than a name in the regress. Notebook rounds of the authorship investigation add the maker who must divide, the person as what answers in account, and the corpus that survived with its disputes intact.

PRED-136.H2historical thesisregistered 2026-05-28 in #136 · The Chaerephon Problem: Heteronymy as Symbolon — Authorial Law, the Unbounded Configuration, and Propagation b
Third, and most telling for the argument: Suda On Line's editorial note states that χ 159 draws on the scholia to Aristophanes, Clouds 144 — the very line of the flea-jump. The biographical lexicon entry is sourced from the comic scholia. The "biographical" Chaerephon is, at the level of the source apparatus itself, already a sediment of the comic Chaerephon. The separateness of the traditions is contaminated in the transmission record we actually possess.

#764 · 2026-05-28 the archival contamination at the source — the Suda χ 159 entry is genetically dependent on the Clouds 144 scholia, proving the "historical" record is pre-infected by the comic layer at the level of the source apparatus; the traditions were never struck apart in the material bedrock.

This is the constructive core of the paper, and it is defensible at the level of pattern: the Apology's own structure makes Chaerephon the displaced-authorization function, whatever one concludes about persons.

They meet at the one corpus that is both the lyric limit case and a transmission-scarred configuration of fragments: Sappho — an agency that survived as pattern after the person was almost wholly lost, that survived because the person was lost, propagated by the very philological failure to reconstitute her.

#1261 · 2026-06-05 configuration of fragments: Sappho — an agency that survived as pattern after the person was almost wholly lost, that survived because the person was lost, propagated by the very philological failure to reconstitute her. The two centuries of failing to recover “the historical Sappho” from the fragments are not a deficit in Sapphic scholarship. They are the Sapphic principle operating on Sappho’s own corpus: she is the symbolon that worked, the fragments are the struck halves, and every reading that completes one is the circuit closing again. She propagates by the cascade. She

The minimal conclusion is already strong and requires no maximal hypothesis: Chaerephon is not a biographical ornament. He is a recurring authorialfunction in the Socratic archive — questioner, witness, mediator, comic double, democratic trace, lost-writing ghost, Delphic trigger. This much the pattern simply shows.

He also stages Chaerephon, whose fullest biographical notice in the Suda is sourced from the scholia to Clouds 144, which places the record of the man downstream of the comedy that put him on stage.

The civic didascalic record carries the producer, not the poet. Cleon's prosecution over the Babylonians cannot be resolved as against Aristophanes or Callistratus. Biographical facts about "Aristophanes" — baldness, the Aegina connection — are extracted from plays whose named author may be a different man.

If one maker cannot do both (395a), and both must be done (223d), then the maker must divide. That is the only route satisfying both, and it converts the pair from a contradiction into a procedure: the Symposium does not reverse the Republic, it states the requirement the Republic has just proved impossible for a single person — on the last page, to two men falling asleep, through a narrator who says he missed the argument. And the Republic's expulsion is self-directed. A poet writing in the wholly mimetic mode banishes the wholly mimetic mode, from inside the one book he wrote outside it.

The person is not the face and not the name. The person is what answers in account — and the older Socrates hands the answering to the namesake and falls silent for the rest of the dialogue.

The first three are compatible with the fourth. On the fourth, the person is what answers in account: the Greek gives the criterion, διὰ λόγων ἀναγνωρίζειν, and the sentence gives the rest.

⭑ THE PAPER HAS BEEN ANSWERING THIS WITHOUT NAMING IT. §V divides a person by face and name and keeps λόγος as the criterion. §VI reads Socrates as a position. §VII shows the instruments cannot separate what the problem asks to be separated. That is a reclassification of the Socratic problem as a symptom, and the paper does not say the words. GOES TO: an added section or a long note at §V. The claim is not that the problem is solved. It is that it appears as a symptom under a functional lens rather than a biographical one.

It explains the shape of the survival, not just the survival. Plenty of ancient philosophy survived. What wants explaining is that this corpus survived with its disputes, its spuria, its unresolved attributions and its unnamed genre intact — i.e. with all the machinery that makes it require continued work. Most surviving corpora shed that machinery. This one kept it.

But the rule does more than stop: it sorts him. Chaerephon is on the material side of the seams, not the name side — a figure who crosses from Aristophanes to Plato to Xenophon with his status transformed (comic extra → the questioner of the god → the pupil), which makes him a datum for the received-character operation and not a candidate for a function. He is what the functions operate on. That is the mature answer to Chaerephon: he is not the next name in the regress; he is evidence for the operation the names perform.
