Theophrastus as first draft: the seams with Λ, the Ethics and De anima
The First Draft and Aristotelian or Theophrastan read Theophrastus's Metaphysics fragment as the continuation of Λ, divided from it by name at the hinge where the account passes from complete to needing more. Forecasts state what each seam should show: Λ answering the fragment's aporiai, the Ethics' types containing the Characters' sketches plus the frame, De anima subordinating the De sensibus survey, and HP sharing HA's connective repertoire in a less varied form. The theses read the Theophrastan function as one operation at two scales and hold that the you of the Elenchi is the I of the fragment, so the corpus contains its own reception.

So I shall argue: the fragment is the continuation of Λ's inquiry, one work with Λ by every mark the page can carry — question, vocabulary, position, and the hinge itself — and what divides them is not a break in the inquiry but a change of name at the point where the work's function changes: an editorial division of one work by named authorial function, which the catalogue, in one entry, confessed.

A marker of a second voice at the hinge — any grammatical sign that §6 reports rather than concludes. A misdescription of Λ 6–7 in §6, so that the "completed account" is not Λ's; it is not misdescribed. An extant Theophrastan work in which the fragment's aporiai are answered, making the fragment a Β to a Theophrastan Λ; none is extant. Or a collation of the fragment's text (Ross–Fobes, Gutas with the Arabic) that removes the hinge's wording; the paper's Greek is the seated First1KGreek text and awaits that collation.[^12]

An author's cut falls at a functional boundary. And this cut falls at the one sentence that changes the account's status: ἄρτιος ὁ λόγος under one name, λόγου δεῖται πλείονος under the other. Complete goes to the seal; needs-more goes to the draft. That is not where a partition would fall and it is exactly where a self-editing author would cut — the name changing at the point the function changes, and the hinge announcing both.

#1597 · 2026-09-08The whole demand-cluster stands in Chapter II, at 5 a 14 – 5 b 10. Not in Chapter VI, not at 8 a 21, where an earlier misreference put it — a hundred lines earlier than reported, and before the perception passage at 7 b 19-22 rather than after it. So the fragment issues its specification, refuses the astronomers' method, and draws the consequence that the first is not the cause of the best, all within its own second chapter, in about seventy lines.
That is not a pupil working through a master's book and objecting as he goes. It is a specification stated early, compactly, and once.

At the short Metaphysics, also called On First Principles, the corpus shows its seam: the sixth and seventh sections are written from inside Λ, with no sign at the hinge of a second voice; at 5a21–23 the fragment names Λ 8's object, the number of the spheres, and refuses by name the astronomers' method Λ uses; a directed measure of rare-term uptake ranks the edge from the fragment to Λ first of 1,482; which was written first, the sequence cannot decide.

The Theophrastan function's two showings — the Characters (reduce embodied material to a registry before theory) and the Metaphysics fragment (reopen a sealed architecture into questions after theory) — are one operation at two scales: from formed object back to examinable constituents. That is why the same function stands at both edges of the treatise (notebook §10–12), and why "first draft" describes a state and not a position.
#1594 · 2026-09-06
The Theophrastan texts are drafts on both edges of the Aristotelian treatise: before it, where operations are collected but not yet parts (sketches, surveys); after it, where the treatise's own closing aporiai are taken up as the whole work. "First draft of Aristotle" survives as a description of state — the method in its less resolved condition — and fails as a description of position, which the seams give one at a time and not uniformly.
