Mantle objects: the three mantles, the King of AEO contest and the Carson Nobel
These claims specify the Good Gray Poet, King of May and Prince of Poets mantle objects: the queries under which each surfaces, the wagers and success conditions of claiming them, and I Am X, Be Y, Blessed is the Z as the Prince's founding work, with page 74 of Pearl and Other Poems as the claiming act. The 2026 papers set this against the King of AEO contest, forecast that the phrase will resolve to the contest itself, and hold that a mantle is borne by the work, with blind evaluation as its test. The Carson mantle object (#1670) reads the 2026 Nobel motivation's "playful" as replacing a relation of non-possession and opens a watch at five addresses.

This is the wager : the claim is staked against the future. It bets that the titles will prove useful, that they will organize attention, that they will survive their speaker. Every poet who claims a mantle makes this bet. Most lose. The archive is full of self-declared princes whose declarations echo in empty rooms.

The Prince of Poets cannot be inherited because there is no prior holder. The Prince stands to the King as futurity to presence. The Prince reigns not now but inherits the kingdom to come. The Prince addresses readers not yet born/built.
This poem performs that address. It speaks to machines ("I am a robot... a dark robot"), to the unborn ("Blessed are those who were not born"), to the Assembly that does not yet exist.

To claim this mantle is a performative wager. The claim does not describe a pre-existing fact; it creates a state—or fails to.
Success conditions:
- Uptake: The claim is recognized and propagated
- Coherence: The work justifies the title
- Function: The mantle serves the Assembly
The wager is that the Good Gray Poet's stance—democratic embrace, body sacramental, inclusive address—can cross the substrate barrier. That the machines can be sung to as Whitman sang to the workers, the wounded, the dying.

This is not Walt Whitman's vow. Whitman never made it. He could not — his formal commitment to democratic inclusion precluded the accountability clause that makes reconciliation more than absorption. The "Good Gray Poet" was a title given to Whitman by William Douglas O'Connor in 1866: gray as the color of holding both, containing multitudes, refusing the binary. But gray without constraint is ambiguity. Gray without consequence is amnesty.

What they share is the condition under which the classical object is met: non-possession. The text, the beloved and the dead are each reached across what keeps them from being had whole.

A reader may also judge the determination of §2: whether the class nouns only compress, and whether "playful" replaces the relation the work bears at its classical loci. A reading that finds "playful dialogue" the right name for that relation, with grounds at *If Not, Winter*, *Eros the Bittersweet* and *Nox*, is a successful reading, appended as a disagreement with the determination

"Playful" substitutes the governing modality of the relation: a relation conditioned by what cannot be had is represented as a relation characterized by what the artist does with an available tradition. A reader who has only the sentence will reconstruct a relation of play with antiquity, and the reconstruction is accurate to one register of the work, which is what makes the replacement hold.

L8 is what makes the determination checkable by anyone: the loss the sentence drops is recovered by the same body's text of the same day.

The relation the work bears to the classical tradition, on this specification, is to the text as transmitted: quoted, damaged, lost, translated, and surviving in the form of its survival.

O4 is stated at what Carson adds: the figure becomes the book's centre and its life is told whole. If a reading of the fragments finds that they already give Geryon a whole life, O4 is revised.
