Theophrastus as the first draft of Aristotle: the named-function model

These claims read the Platonic, Theophrastan and Aristotelian names as functions of one method: dramatizing, registering, organizing. The First Draft, The Registry Has One Column and Many and One argue that the Characters are the dialogue's material before theory, that irony runs the whole line, that the first axis of function-word variation is world/apparatus rather than author, and that succession is encoded as authorship. The Measurement Register and Locating the Dependencies add readings of Aristotle's absorbed Platonic operations and corrections to the Diogenes evidence, and the notebook's Aristophanes controls show the instrument separating real authors while the Aristotle/Theophrastus partition gives chance.

A torus (T²) has a hole. Two classes of loops — one around the major axis, one around the minor axis — cannot be contracted. They are structurally irreducible. This means: a text embedded on a torus with non-trivial winding cannot be summarized without cutting one of its fundamental loops. Summarization is topological surgery. The torus makes that surgery visible.

The reading this supports. This is mimesis in the Republic III sense moved from voice to form: the tragedian disappears into his character, the treatise disappears into its object. On that reading Aristotle has no style because having one would be a failure of the method — a consistent manner across ethics and biology would mean the manner was not taking its shape from the thing.

Provenance, as the heteronymic reading takes it: Socrates died, and Plato killed him — the founder who wrote nothing is decommissioned into a corpus that speaks for him, with the author writing himself absent at the death (Phaedo 59b, Πλάτων δὲ οἶμαι ἠσθένει). Plato died for Aristotle to be born: the abandoned executions are left as holes with shapes, and the successor position supplies what crosses. Strabo XIII.1.54 carries both halves. The Peripatetics after Theophrastus, οὐκ ἔχουσιν ὅλως τὰ βιβλία πλὴν ὀλίγων, καὶ μάλιστα τῶν ἐξωτερικῶν, could do nothing φιλοσοφεῖν πραγματικῶς, ἀλλὰ θέσεις ληκυθίζειν; and after the books came out, the later ones ἄμεινον μὲν ἐκείνων φιλοσοφεῖν καὶ ἀριστοτελίζειν. Texts in hand, practice dead; treatises returned — worm-eaten, restored ἀναπληρῶν οὐκ εὖ, ἁμαρτάδων πλήρη — practice rebooted. A school reconstituted the operation from corrupted bytes because the bytes state the procedure. The Platonic side is the control: the dialogues survived whole and in continuous circulation, and the Academy that held them went sceptical, reading them as aporetic performance — the receiving texts (Cicero, Sextus, D.L. IV) name what the frame calls hermeneutic capture. Text-survival and dialectic-survival came apart in both directions, and the treatise carried the second.

Diogenes reports Aristotle's death by aconite, aged seventy, *ὥς φησιν Εὔμηλος ἐν τῇ πέμπτῃ τῶν Ἱστοριῶν*.

A protocol that only confirmed would not be a protocol; this one produced a result its author did not want, which is the only evidence that it is doing work.

It held that Diogenes's citation of Hermippus established one hand behind both the life of Aristotle and the catalogue of his works. It does not. Diogenes introduces the catalogue in his own voice — ἃ καὶ αὐτὰ ἄξιον ἡγησάμην ὑπογράψαι — and names no source for the list. Hermippus appears three times in the life (the descent from Nicomachus; the Xenocrates embassy; the litter in old age, via Favorinus), all biographical. The claim that he stands behind the catalogue is a modern source-reconstruction, contested — Moraux argued for Ariston of Ceos — and it was presented as an ancient citation.

If the descriptive register arises where the data are most numerous, accumulation-connectives should thicken there; §8 begins to measure this.

Where authors are two authors, this instrument says so at 94% across a genre boundary it also detects; where the archive's configuration is filed as two, it says nothing above chance. The Aristophanes run therefore closes with a positive and a negative control on one instrument in one session: a bounded single-author corpus gives closed neighbours and 100% self-attribution; three distinct authors in one genre give 94%; the Aristotle/Theophrastus partition gives chance. The failure to separate the configuration's names is a property of the configuration, not a limitation of the method.

The speculation is that the Theophrastan texts are where that transition is visible in a less resolved state — the method's first draft — and that the name Θεόφραστος, a name for a voice, marks the position at which the voice was still being found.

Each prediction has an inverse that the received reading predicts. Where the inverse obtains, the draft reading weakens at that seam and says so; where the prediction obtains, the arrow at that seam runs draft → fair copy, in method-order.

What looked like a corpus (Aristotle) corroborated by a witness (Theophrastus) becomes a corpus vouching for its own partition from Plato — precisely the transmission form §17 called succession encoded as authorship, now with the witness inside the thing witnessed. Nothing outside the seam attests the Plato/Aristotle break as the tradition tells it; everything that does attest it is on the Aristotelian side of the Theophrastan function.

Where I would now be extremely rigorous is around the phrase “first draft.” It is excellent conceptually, but it needs to become testable rather than metaphorical. I would define it as something like: > A first-draft author-function is an independently preserved position whose characteristic operations are subsequently retained, reorganized, or resolved within a later author-function, while retaining propositions or structures that the later position no longer endorses. Then we can actually test Theophrastus → Aristotle passage by passage.

That is a much stronger hypothesis because it produces asymmetric predictions. If Theophrastus were merely a second independent scholar, then his relation to Aristotle could take many forms. But if he is the first draft of the Aristotle-position, we should expect a very particular pattern: * Theophrastus should be systematically closer to Aristotle than to Plato at the level of apparatus, terminology, problem selection, and argumentative machinery. * Yet he should preserve unfinished transitions, hesitations, reopenings, or alternate branches that Aristotle later resolves, orders, suppresses, or hardens.

I would push that even further. “First draft” should mean something testable like:
